LENT STARTED DURING QUEEN ELIZABETH 1 REIGN, - PST. IGWE by Ifeyinwa Okoye

The tradition of Lent in the Anglican Church started during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1 of England.
Disclosing this during an exclusive interview with our reporter Ifeyinwa Okoye, the assist Pastor in the St. Mary Anglican Church Karowi Ijesha, Lagos, Ord. Chibunna Igwe, explained that Lent is one of the seasons of the Church.
According to the servant of God, "Apart from the Advent which ushers us into a new year of the Church, then we have the Epiphany, the next season that is important in Anglican Church, is the Lent. It started in Anglican Church during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1 who was coronated on 15 January, 1559. She started it on Ash Wednesday in Anglican Church.
" If you count it, it was the time when Jesus Christ fasted for 40 days," he remarked.
On how the Church determines the date of Lent Pastor Igwe explained that the Church calendar starts in Advent which according to him, simply meant the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Advent. " We have almost four for five Sundays in that Advent which ushers us into Christmas. After Chritmas, we have one and two which usher us into Epiphany which is always in 6th January.
"After the first Sunday Epiphany, it will usher us into Sesajesima                 Quinquagesima and others. Quinquagesima ushers us into Lent. That is how we determine every season which starts from Advent has its own Sunday attached to that Sunday.
Pastor Chibunna Igwe, who is also a student of Anglican Institution of West African Theological Seminary, Lagos, explained that ash is used as a symbol to show that man is of dust, that we Christians are ash, meaning nothing.
The benefits of Lent are numerous, he disclosed, such that we don't see its disadvantages. Not only that it separates us from the world  but it also brings us closer to God. It makes us to identify with the sufferings of our Lord Jesus Christ while on earth. By participating in Lent, our salvation will be restored, our relationship with God renewed and revived.
For our Lent to make impacts and achieve the expected results, Ordinand Igwe explained, " It must be done with prayer and fasting. It also calls for giving of alms to the less privileged, love God and be faithful. Lent is a revival season, each participant is expected to remain faithful, holy and prayerful even after the Lenten period.
Lent, also meaning in Latin Quadigram) is a solumn religious observance in the Christian liturgical calendar that begins on Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday derived its name from the practice of blessing ashes made from palm branches blessed on the previous year's  Palm Sunday, and placing them on the heads of participants to the accompaniment of the words " Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return," or "Repent, and believe in the Gospel." Lent starts on Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days. The week of Lent is called Holy Week. Lent reminds Christians the time when Jesus Christ went to fast and pray before beginning His work for God.
