POLICE DISARM VIGILANTES, OTHERS

Town unions, vigilantes, hunters, neighbourhood watch, watch night men and other similar groups in Anambra State have been asked to surrender their firearms and weapons fabricated to kill.
Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Mr. Garba Umar made this in a press conference in his office at Amawbia, Anambra State. According to him, the order was sequel to the recent directive by the Inspector General of Police(IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris.
The prohibited firearms, CP Umar said, included artillery, apparatus for the discharge of any explosives of gas diffusion projectiles, rocket weapons, bomb and others like machine guns, of all categories as well as any other firearms.
A nine-man task force chaired by an assistant commissioner of police, Mr. Baba Maiyaki has been set up by the Command to enforce the exercise which Mr. Umar said was targeted at full enforcement of the Firearms Act of 2004.
